High Cortisol And High Dhea Level What Could It Be? Is It Adrenal Fatigue Or Something Else?

By admin

You did not indicate the type of cortisol testing nor the DHEA (or levels) which would have been more helpful.
As another responder indicated, time of day is very important for these tests.
High cortisol and high DHEA normally indicate Cushing’s syndrome. You may feel fatigue as ironically, the symptoms of too much or too little cortisol are not too different in the fatigue area. I know as I had Cushing’s disease (from a pituitary tumor) and to resolve that, I had to have both my adrenals removed so now I am on the other end of the spectrum with total adrenal insuffiiency.
DHEA is produced in the adrenals and can impact the male and female hormones. Since it could be either, and there is no way of choosing (the body does it), all those hormones should be tested as well from LH. FSH on down.
Hormones are a system – when one goes off, often others go off as well. Frequently, the endocrinologist will just test a few and stop as soon as they found one thing abnormal. Make sure you find a doctor you like and tests everything and tests correctly. Get copies of everything and learn all you can.

well, it depends on the time of the day the sample was taken. On a simple sample, it shows the normal response to stress, but if those values keep high even when the stressor is away, they show chronic stress states. In the initial stages of adrenal fatigue, cortisol and DHEA are high, then, dhea lowers as the adrenal glands get depleted.

High Cortisol levels can cause stress, belly fat weight gain, it can affect your immune system and more.
High DHEA levels seem to have something to do with fertility.

Its probably a pituitary tumor (they are usually benign). That would be the only reason why 2 hormones are elevated. You need a pituitary MRI and to have ALL your hormone levels tested.
